Whole Masoor Dal Recipe

Ingredients

  • 1 cup whole masoor dal (red lentils), washed and rinsed
  • 2 tablespoons crushed garlic
  • 1 teaspoon red chili powder (adjust to taste)
  • 1 tablespoon coriander powder
  • Salt to taste
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 8 cups water
  • 1/4 cup tamarind water (extracted from tamarind pulp)
  • 3 tablespoons ghee (clarified butter)
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds (jeera)
  • 1 teaspoon mustard seeds (rai)
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 1 tomato, finely chopped
  • 1 green chili, slit (optional)
  • Fresh coriander leaves, chopped for garnish

Instructions

  1. Cook the dal: In a pressure cooker, add washed whole masoor dal, crushed garlic, red chili powder, coriander powder, salt, turmeric powder, and 8 cups of water. Close the lid of the pressure cooker and cook on medium heat until the dal is tender (about 8-10 whistles). Let the pressure release naturally.

  2. Add tamarind water: Once the pressure is released, open the cooker and stir in the tamarind water. Simmer the dal for 2 minutes to blend the flavors.

  3. Prepare the tadka: In a small pan, heat ghee over medium heat. Add cumin seeds and mustard seeds. Let them crackle.

  4. Saute the aromatics: Add finely chopped onion, tomato, and green chili (if using) to the pan. Saute until the onions turn golden brown and tomatoes are soft.

  5. Combine tadka with dal: Pour the prepared tadka (tempering) into the cooked dal mixture. Mix well to combine, ensuring the flavors are evenly distributed.

  6. Garnish and serve: Garnish the Whole Masoor Dal with fresh chopped coriander leaves.

  7. Serve hot: Serve the dal hot with steamed rice or roti.

Enjoy the wholesome flavors and nutritious goodness of this Whole Masoor Dal, enriched with the aromatic tempering and balanced spices!

Tip
